Western Moves to 18 After Sweeping Three-way Series at Home
Altus, Okla. – The Pioneers moved to #18 in the national rankings after sweeping a three-way round-robin against Navarro College and Barton Community College on February 28 and 29 at home.
The series began with an 11-0 shutout over Barton with freshman Halle Fischer (Tuttle, Okla.) leading the way in runs.
Western then faced the Navarro Bulldogs. The score was tied with one run each going into the sixth inning. A Navarro home run added two runs in the top of the sixth, but Western answered with four runs of their own including a home run from sophomore Marilyn Alvarado (Athens, Tex.). Navarro scored once more in the seventh but was unable to topple Western's defense. Pioneers win 5-4.

Pioneers Crack National Top 20
Altus, Okla. – For the first time in school history, the Pioneers have broken into the national top 20 following a transcendent onset to the 2020 season.
Leading the team to a 11-1 start are sophomores Rosie Ward and Cheyenne Mahy and freshmen MaKayla and Maranda Gibson.
Ward, a right-hander from Cache, Okla., leads the team with a .512 batting average. After 41 at bats, Ward is dominating the plate with 11 runs, 16 RBIs and five home runs. Ward takes care of business behind the plate as catcher, allowing only one passed ball in 67 innings and earning 65 put outs.
Mahy has returned to the circle with a vengeance after a season-ending injury brought 2019 to a halt. The NJCAA has named her Region II player of the week twice this season and for good reason. Mahy has pitched 46 innings, earning seven wins in seven games started with 47 strikeouts and only 29 hits and 12 runs allowed. Batting, Mahy has 16 hits, 12 runs, six home runs and 12 RBIs.
Twin sisters MaKayla and Maranda Gibson from Duncan, Okla. lead Region II in stolen bases- nine in 35 at bats for MaKayla and eight in 34 for Maranda. Defensively, Makayla has 19 put outs and two assists from first base. In left field, Maranda has 20 put outs and one assist.
The Pioneers will face Navarro and Barton in Altus on February 28-29 and will begin conference play against Rose State College on March 10.
